Nihilism is not the solution

Listened to Rainn Wilson on Brian Baumgartner's podcast, and a lot of what he says is how his spiritual perspective on life grounds himself to reality. And how with all the shitty things going on, how the Universe seems to fuck things up for you at every opportunity and how everything's pointless, and often one wants to take the nihilistic trollish path.

And the solution is not nihilism. A lack of faith in the world, in people around you, and the power of humanity untethers one from reality. One misses out on the social connections and the happiness and physical rewards they bring. It is underselling the universe and the niceness of the world to not have faith in humanity.

To be disappointed, to have your heart broken is to live. A well-defended and protected heart is a heart that's not lived. It has webs grown all around it. It dies of sadness, without having ever lived. To live is to suffer. To suffer is to have lived. Without suffering, one hasn't really lived. Yes the world is becoming harder to live inside your comfort zone, but by being forced to go out of comfort zone more often, we're being trained to be more adaptive, we're learning to change our attitudes to changing circumstances with radical acceptance of new situation

Nihilism is not the solution, it never is. It is only a temporary ointment that'll leave the wound to fester but underneath the suffering remains. To really move on, one must rip off the bandaid, put antibiotics, and go on physical therapy all day every day. One learns to live only by living.

Let's live harder.
