The first mention of tiktok on this blog

A former classmate of mine back from BNKS is a popular tiktok star with tens of thousands of followers. She has her cute little studio where she's got the lights and microphones setup. I bring tiktok up because it's come up in the news a lot lately, mostly in the context of middle-school and high-school teachers, and scientists and doctors using it to reach out to students and young people. Like the time a chemistry teacher released a funny video about the elements and chemical reaction and it went viral, or the time a doctor made a video about how vaccines don't cause other unrelated diseases and that went viral too. There have been other stories of teachers offering classes on tiktok.

I wonder what's different about tiktok versus every other platform out there that makes it so popular for thos particular kinds of outreach. Why not youtube, for example, or snapchat? I'm going to guess the reason for this strange popularity is that it's particularly popular among younger people, and is the youngest of the more popular social-media apps, there's still this mysticism about what it is and what people are using it for and awh dang what a cool thing these young folks are doing. If a chemistry teacher were producing those videos on youtube, she'd be like the ten-thousandth person to do it there, but she does it on tiktok and it's the talk of the town because awhh look at tiktok playing with the big boys pretending it's a real big-time app!

In any case, all the videos I've seen of it are lame and annoying and I really don't think I'm ever going to end up using it, particularly the 'dubbing over' effect its got.
