It's not that I'm now an workaholic. The circumstances have turned such that working an hour or so in the evening makes the most sense.
I'm working on what can be summarized as installing software in complex environments, that takes forever to run. Doing it all at regular work hours is frustrating because you press a button, wait for two hours to fail, make a small change and try again. The time spent waiting is a total waste because you can't really focus on anything else, and it's a negative addition to your life because now you're teaching your brain that rewarding it with junk information and random youtube channels is a valid response to frustration. Instead, if I could be working on my personal stuff, and keep working later in the evening, that saves everybody the trouble. Also that means the final deployment happens after I sleep and my coworkers in Europe can pick up after me and get those deploys running again if something is missing.
The one downside is sometime it feels like work never ends. The other part of the downside is I feel less guilty because I'm not just lying to myself about working in the evenings, I'm proper working working.
