I have watched every episode of The Office at least a dozen times. And that's at the lower end of my estimates. It's not like I'm a fanatic, I don't go around sharing theories or untangling the hidden messages (do read them once a while). It's just that I find that it's the show most condusive to repeated rewatches. No need to pay a hundred percent attention. Have it running in the background and you can jump back in whenever the good parts are in.
I have friends and family, people I care about, who dislike the last few seasons. The post Carrell seasons. For me season 8 is one of the funniest, and Robert California is such an fun-to-watch creep he's one of my favourite characters even though he appears only for a dozen episodes over a season. It's as if an alien from a very different TV show -- or planet -- decided to show up and interact with the gang. Perhaps that's why so many people dislike the season, because he's so other-worldly. I like it because like real life, he just shows up, disrupts, leaves, with no theme or logic. It just happens. Quite randomly. Like life.
I have slowly, very slowly, begun liking season 9. The boom guy arc I don't care for at all, what a pointless annoying distraction it is. If they meant to show conflict and misunderstanding in our favourite couple, there were better and more understanding ways to show it. Ham-fisting a loser creep into the middle of our characters' lives was a bad decision. Even Cathy was a better character than him. Oh Cathy! How I wish it was about Cathy. Instead the two understanding people in love turn to non-communicating assholes. For no real reason. What was the cause of their conflict? The financial issues? The sorta secrets? And why didn't they ever talk about those, because we know they like talking to each other. Poorly executed conflict sigh. Hot girl distraction would have been such a good conflict.
And that's it. As I write this, The Office plays in the background.
