An admission: I was wrong about Bojack's final season final part. In an earlier post I said it was too harsh to bojack and it sucked, prematurely after watching the trailers. While I want to hold the first judgment for further discussion, the second part I was categorically wrong in. It's great, it's funny smart poignant and gives a proper closure.
A few comments: the final treatment of the major non-Bojack characters was satisfying, and poor Diane got a proper closure. Though oof things got rough for her and I can't be the only one to think she was awful -- thereby identifying with other people who made her feel crap. In the end it worked out, she got the happy stable life that she deserved away from the madness of LA.
PC and Judah's unexpected love story was heartwarming. PC was properly rewarded for every bit of work she'd put into her career and life. Her kindness and tolerance towards Bojack was cool.
Mr. Peanutbutter makes me want to cry: his undying loyalty and friendship towards Bojack, despite constant betrayal of trust and mistreatment make him my favorite character. Perhaps it's not in Bojack's genes but it would be great if he showed some form of appreciation towards his friend's unyielding unconditional love.
Diane and Mr PB's gag arc of writing just 'coming' to Mr. PB while Diane had to struggle and torture herself to barely get where he's at was great. Loved it because it shows Diane's grown to admit that life's unfair and the way to beat it is to keep fighting and fighting until you sorta even the odds and even then it's still going to fine because you're trying and you can't fix the whole world because your suffering was not rewarded.
Speaking of suffering, there was some discussion about suffering what it's work and if it's necessary, etcetera for about an episode. Regular readers of the blog will note that suffering has been a regular topic of discussions in these pages. Nothing to add there, the writers play around with what suffering should mean but don't delve into great depths. It is after all a comedy involving anthropomorphic cartoon animals.
Now that I've jotted the major points I could think of, lets go back to the topic of whether Bojack truly 'deserved' it.
Is Bojack a 'good' character? No. He's conflicted, he's a mixed bag and he's done a lot of awful things. Has he caused more damage than other beloved tv characters? Is he more awful than someone like say, Michael Scott from The Office, who's an awful awful human being who I'll argue to the hill has been more awful in gross than Bojack. What Michael's going for him compared to Bojack is he's got some redeeming qualities. Bojack seems irredeemable but dear gods he's tried particularly in the last season. If Michael Scott gets a happy ending, and going by the universal karmic law of light entertainment, Bojack should be redeemed too, in a fair Universe. The Universe is unfair, as Diane comes to accept in the final two episodes. What Bojack gets in the end is then not a punishment or a comeuppance for his deeds it's not karma, it's the universe being a bitch at someone who's not a good person, but really didn't deserve what he got in the end. He did play the cards he was given. And that probably undermines the 'message' the finale was going with.
But that's of no concern, still a goddamn good show and an amazing final season.
I might revisit individual episodes or arcs in the future.
