Give us back our land

A poem written from the PoV of one of the characters from the Escape from Kathmandu series.

A piece of news here,
A piece of news there
And then puff, like smoke
It disappears.

Where are our loved ones, are they safe
What has become of hour land, is it pristine
And what of our fellow beings, the rhinos
and the elephants, are they thriving?
Nobody knows, and nobody cares,
It's only us, the million of us, trapped outside
And trapped in the inside
By our love, and our pride.

Take these chains away!

Why us, I wonder, why this point in time
How could this have happened I shout
With all the internet, and mass communication so fine
You can get news from America twenty-four seven
And yet we know not back from our homeland
If it's hell in there, or is it heaven.

What happened to the news channels and the journalists
All the brave souls, who dared speak out
Breaking the secrecy, that thick opaque mist
We heard of those grand plans, and the authoritarian tilt
Of civil rights being taken away, and enforced guilt.
We heard of nationalization, we heard of wargames
Of those expensive American factories being licked by flames.

But nary a tale have we heard, after the early years
Not of our loved ones, nor about the block.
Oh what has happened to us, what of our nation
And we wonder and we keep asking, each other and everybody
Why in this godforsaken world won't anybody
Take any action.

Where are the Americans, with their lies of freedom
What about the Indians, their threats of democracy
And excuses about national security
Where are the Chinese, the cool friends of the Koreans North
At least they should have dispatched their economic advisors forth,
From whom we might have had gotten, any news of our land.

How are the borders shut so tight
And why won't the secret spy drones take their flight
Into the skies
And tell us what the bastards have been upto
Why they have torn us apart
Why they abandoned us, and where they're going...
for a start.

How big must their guns be,
TO scare away the American might
Can't those fuckers just take a predator or two
And bomb the shit in the darkness of the night
How great must the prowess of these loonies be
To hold back the aggresion of the Indian armee
Or are they bribing everybody to keep their holes shut
Why why why is this happening to us, this feels wrong
deep inside my gut.

Our nation oh so great
Why must you now make us hate
The place where we came from
And want to go back, give us a break.
Those bastard leaders, they must be eyes deep
In the filth of their crime
Somebody help us take our country back,
So we may make them do their time
Give us our freedoms, give us our rights
We want to be home, in those cold dark nights.

Oh lovely mother, oh dear one
Why must you not take us back.
Your children we are, we love thy
Why must you make us suffer like this,
Why oh why, why oh why, why why why.
