A poor man's recipe for dinner

Ingredients:

A few handfuls of grains of rice, saved during the autumn, or begged from householders
Water, preferably clean
Block of rock salt
Edible green leaves stolen from the temple
Any dried vegetables you have at home

Steps:

  1. Put your pot on the mud stove and set alight a few blocks of wood underneath: not too many though, because you need to make them last to the next dry season.

  2. Pour some water on the pot, depending on how many people there are in the household, about two or three handfuls per person. Remember to not waste it because your wife brought the large pail of water from the stream two hours away.

  3. DO NOT let the water boil away! Cover it with a metal plate, and just as it gets hot, put several thimbleful of dried vegetables into the pot. The vegetables give sustenance and flavor.

  4. Rub the rock salt against the wall or the wood until it is powdered, and pour the grained salt into the pot.

  5. Put rice in, and take one of the firefood out. You don't want to waste fire on boiling the water.

  6. If you correctly stole the edible leaves from the temple, put those in the container after 30 minutes.

  7. Serve the rice too all your family members, don't forget to use the covering plate as a dish too! Make sure everybody gets some leaves.

  8. Enjoy!
