The Insane onion prices in Kathmandu

Onion prices have gone crazy yet again. South Asia is crazy for them herbs and there was a time about
2 decades ago when seasonal prices rose up to FIVE times of the regular prices due to a crop failure and poor government policy to address that. There were jokes( possibly real) of shops giving 'out complimentary onions after purchase of pricey booze or clothing, and everybody talked about how they should have invested in onions and not gold.

Well prices are crazy for, onion again. The Indian government has put 30 to export taxes on them so they're super duper expensive in Kathmandu, more than twice the price they would otherwise have been. The price of onions is the talk of the town, from the street vendors to the parliament. The silly part of all of this is, if the Indian government hadn't put the stupid tax restrictions, the growers would be able to be correctly sensitive to the high demand due to the high prices, and adjust their current crops accordingly.

But now that they don't get to benefit from the high prices, it'll take much longer for them prices to come back down to earth. Ah well. Nobody said the Indian government was market friendly so this was only too expected.
