Reflections on a quarter's worth of art classes

Last art class ended, taught by husband of the instructor, drew leonardo's sketches, good lesson, learned so much, gave me confidence, all about practice and technique and rarely about the 'gift' of drawing, patience is of tantamount importance, need to 'defocus' and 'refocus' to get the 'basic idea' for a quick sketch, and then zoom in to fill the details, help see the world in a different perspective.

My semester worth of art class has ended, the first one I've ever taken outside middle school. And the first class of any kind since college that doesn't directly fit into my professional goals.

The last lesson was taught by the instructor's husband -- she was out recovering from illness -- we drew Leonardo's self-portrait sketches, the technical ones, and maaan it was so freaking hard. It was a great lesson, gave a good concept of how the face works in terms of proportions and connecting different parts and how to make them more realistic than even the most 'natural' paintings.

The course has been incredible, it gave me confidence that I too could draw, the skill is all about practice and developing good techniques and an 'eye' to see the important technical details from the world. It's rarely about the 'gift' of drawing, it's about keeping yourself in the same spot and keep drawing until your subject comes to life, and eventually is completed.

The class taught me to 'defocus' -- to simplify the complexities of the real world so the outline is easily sketched, to come up with the initial drawing. It taught me to 'refocus', so once you've drawn the rough sketch, you can fill in the details to the level of your expertise. You can always fill in the details.

The class helped me see the world in a different perspective, it make me more arts-oriented, and just helped me enjoy life so goddamn well. The couple of hundred (low digits) dollars I spent for the course were fully worth their value in gold. Which is why I registered for the course next semester. Looking forward to it~!
