Review: Jaani dushman (2002)

I could create a podcast about it, there's so much content. Ideally with a smart really outspoken and popular woman, who also happens to be married yes with two children because people are gonna complain ohh literally anything he talks about he somehow has to bring up women doesn't he what a strange fellow a bit desperate if you ask me and yeah that's not the point, it's about the dynamic between to people that can kinda be flirty and joke but obviously she has a husband okay people and two kids what kinda' dirtbag does like anything serious with a person like that but on the other hand heyy she's not a child or a baby and one wouldn't want to tell other people what to do so if she's into that sort of stuff maybe the co-host wouldn't mind exploring where things might go and two kids that too fully trained would be kinda' cool poor husband thought, it's good you didn't get to know him any more than you did yeah they're probably going to see you as the villain all of them for a bit but it's two consenting adults doing nice wholesome things and all relationships must come to an end, it's not like he had the lease for her life and the seven following it, this is a free-ish society people as long as the various communist parties are not affected who gives an efff.

The point is, what a strange movie, this, Jaani Dushman.

Apparently the production took a really long time, like measured in decades. And even then it was very close to not being done, but somehow they released it in 2002.

The special effects are clearly picked right off of the terminator movies, including the destruction of the villain. This is third-rate copy of the terminator in terms of visual effects.

In terms of casting...this one's got like seven lead actors, and four actresses. It's got sunny deol, akshay kumar, sunil shetty, manisha koirala, and a very young-looking Sonu nigam. His acting is so bad guys.

The acting is bad all round, to be fair. And that's probably the biggest strength of this movie.

The 'ethics' 'morality', 'kosherness' of the movie, lets not go there, the values are all fucked up, lots of harassment etcetera, my major concern being women are given close to zero agency whatever circumstances they find themselves in.

There's way wayy to much obsession with snakes. Why is Bollywood so goddamn crazy about Naags and Naag Kanyaas and all of that, is that a misreading of the old books, or some sort of racist misogynistic interpretation of old literature with a whole lotta' slut shaming involved? I don't even want to delve into the sexual and ethnic politics of the movie.

The story sucks. There's nothing to it. I could summarize it in a medium-sized sentence, and that's still giving you way too much information than you need.

The songs are extremely mediocre, the dialog sucks.

Still an interesting, entertaining movie though. Be ready with the remote to fast-forward, but ehh, there's a lot worse ways to spend 40 minutes. The total runtime is slightly under 2 hours 30 minutes, but if you speed up the play speed, and skip the songs, you'll probably get done in under an hour.

And that's the biggest compliment I'll give the movie.
