It must have been fun to write this movie, Ludo, it's got a bunch of actors I don't recognize, oh there's Avishek Bachchan who dies in the end, and he's the only major character that dies, SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER, so it's not too bad. The trailer makes it look like it's an intense thriller comedy, but it's more comedy and a bit of drama, not much of a thriller. I'd have preferred if it was more slapstick than it is, there's some unnecessary drama and emotional manipulation strewn about, hinted at by the sudden shift in the music followed by cheap attempts to build up tears. That's lame, so lame. Besides that, it's actually a decent movie.
I say you should watch it.
The 'framing' of the movie, where two immortal gods are playing a game of chance, before clearing things in the end, is nonsensical. They say it out aloud they're figments of people's imagination, but it's unclear who's imagining them, because the timing makes no sense, and if they're 'real' entities in any sense, they've probably done this thing a billion billion times over the course of a million years to be talking about things such as 'what is good and what is bad, who can even decideee'. It's like somebody realize they needed to pepper in some 'depth' into this, but were like ehh fuck it, those numb nuts aren't gonna get it if we put in something smart and complicated so we'll put in something bullshit and just so we know the message has gone through we'll hammer on the point multiple times, and then maybe even show what we mean, so they understand it, and owh boy that's totally gonna blowww their minds, after they get the dozen obvious hints we've been dropping throughout.
What else. What else. Oooh yeah, the movie's unpredictable, I've given the spoilers away but it's really quite something, so many twists turns and amazing U-turns, it seems like they're meant to reflect how a game of 'ludo' works, question mark, but it's not that much related, it's just something they've used as a means to connect various unrelated storylines into one contiguous one. It's cute.
Is it the best thing I've ever watched in recent times? Not by a long shot. The songs are just okay, the story is gripping sorta but nothing that would blow one's mind. The acting's pretty decent all around, and the actors are easy on the eye. But that's it. I loved Good Newws, for example because it was self-aware nonstop barrage of jokes, it had a point to make, and the songs were amazing. This movie is no good news. But those are high standards to hold.
Most of the actors were new, the ones I knew already I enjoyed watching. The writer-director must have had one hell of a time, connecting different pieces and organizing the giant pastiche, like completing a puzzle. And it shows, the writing is pretty strong. Everything else, pretty decent. It's a good movie to pass the time and be mildly entertained.
